Abarca Announces 2021 Better Care Community Program Winners

Selected non-profits include a laboratory doing COVID-19 research and the program’s first winner in Florida.

San Juan, PR - Abarca, a pharmacy benefit manager that is disrupting the industry with an entirely new approach to technology and business practices, announced the 2021 winners of its Better Care Community Program. Now in its second year, this philanthropic initiative provides health-related charities in Puerto Rico and Florida with financial and volunteer support.

“Abarca is committed to finding a better way in healthcare, and that begins at the community health level,” said Adriana Ramirez, Abarca’s Chief Operating Officer. “Selected by all Abarcans, this year’s winners are each taking a unique approach to making healthcare awesome, and we are looking forward to helping them make a difference.”

Launched in 2019 and led by a committee of Abarca team members, the Better Care Community Program was expanded this year to include research grants and charitable organizations in Florida and Puerto Rico, where a significant number of employees live and work. In 2021, the community program will support:

1. The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, as it continues its Poseidon Clinical Trial-- is testing the impact of two common supplements on halting or delaying the progression of diabetes. This is the first Florida-based organization to be selected by the Better Care Community Program.
   

2. The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus is conducting a statistical analysis as it investigates the role that fungal spores and pollen play in susceptibility to COVID-19. This project will benefit from accessing Abarca’s clinical and analytics teams.
   

3. The Community Organization of MS and Cancer (COMSC) conducts educational events and patient outreach for patients with multiple sclerosis.
   

4. Hogar Infantíl Jesús Nazareno, a children’s shelter, continues to provide pediatric care for residents with regular medical care.
   

5. Ciencia Puerto Rico continues to host a series of workshops across the island to engage female middle and high school students in STEM+H through their Seeds of Success program. This program impacts over 3,500 girls annually.
