Leadership Is Not a Solo Sport: Three Moves for CEOs Who Want Real Community

“I feel like I’m carrying this alone.”

In almost every strategy session I’ve had with a CEO over the past few years, a version of that sentence eventually comes up.

On paper, they’re surrounded by people: teams, advisors, a board. In reality, many leaders have very few places where they can be honest about the weight they’re carrying, the doubts they have, or the questions they don’t yet have answers to. If there is one thing those conversations have taught me, it is that leadership is not a solo sport..

Why It Gets Lonely At The Top

That’s why I care so much about what’s happening in communities like Endeavor, ALPFA, or SanturceTech and so many others across the United States. On the surface, they look like networking events, panels, and conferences. Underneath, they are pressure valves and pattern-recognition machines for people trying to build in a complex environment.

At SanturceTech, I’ve sat in conversations that bounce from AI business models to succession planning, from scaling remote teams to managing burnout. At Endeavor, I’ve watched founders from all over the world share stories that would never fit into a pitch deck: almost shutting down, reinvesting everything, the moment a bet finally turned into an honest company.

Do these rooms move the needle in a straight line? Probably not.

Ecosystems rarely grow in straight lines. They grow through repeated collisions among people doing the work, and through the quiet realization that you’re not the only one facing your particular mix of chaos and opportunity. Someone else may have already solved your current constraint, and your own lessons might save someone a year of pain.

What This Has To Do With Your Culture

Man in a black suit holds an orange mask to his face against a dark background, creating a mysterious, contemplative mood.

The honesty you find in those rooms is the same honesty your company needs, and it starts at the top. Teams take their cues from the CEO about whether it’s safe to say “I don’t know yet,” to raise a problem early, or to admit that a plan isn’t working.

Leaders who have a place to drop the mask without dropping their standards tend to make that easier for everyone else. A culture rarely becomes more open than the person at its center.

Leadership Is Not A Solo Sport: It’s A Contact Sport

If you’re leading anything right now, here are three moves worth making:

  • Show up in the rooms where the real conversations are happening.  Not only the ones where you’re speaking.

  • Listen more than you talk.  You’ll hear how others are dealing with regulation, capital, talent, and culture.

  • Share one thing you wish someone had told you earlier in your journey.  That’s usually what the person across from you needed to hear.

As we think about our socioeconomic future, we rightly talk about policy, incentives, and large investments. But we should also talk about the quieter infrastructure: the rooms where founders, intrapreneurs, and executives come together without filters.

And, for Hispanic-led businesses, that community is one of our greatest unfair advantages, if we choose to protect it and participate in it.

So here’s a question to take into your next quarter: When was the last time you left a room with more perspective than you brought in?

Seguimos guapeando.
